Catalonia

Catalonia is an autonomous community of Spain and stands leader in Spain regarding the economic, industrial and business activity. The capital and largest city is Barcelona. Being only a 6% of the territory and hosting 7.6 million people, it accounts for nearly 20% of the Spanish GDP and 30% of the economic foreign sector.

With under 20% of state spending, Catalan enterprise still accounts for nearly 22% of companies responsible for innovation with the figure even higher among SMEs. Special focus is above all on the pharma industry, biotech, biomedicine, medical technologies, ICTs, multimedia and audio-visual sectors.

The region hosts over 50 design schools, training some 6,000 professionals a year. Over the years, these professionals have built close links to sectors such as technology, communications, culture and the economy, whilst defining a flourishing local design culture in fields such as graphic design, industrial design, retail, architecture and fashion. And due to this active design ecosystem, international companies such as Volvo or Hewlett Packard have chosen Catalonia to locate their top strategic design centres.

Catalonia is represented by Accio in the DC-Network.
