Baden-Württemberg is the third largest federal state of Germany, both in size (35.674 km²) and in population (11 million). In 2020, Baden-Württemberg had a Gross Domestic Product of 501 billion Euro, making it one of the strongest economies in Europe with a market size of international level.

Baden-Württemberg is one of the most competitive and innovative regions in Europe and the world, featuring the highest innovation index with 123 patent applications per 100,000 inhabitants. In fact, 5.79 % of GDP go directly into R&D – more than in any other region in Europe and more than in other major OECD countries like Japan or the USA. This unique scientific and technological infrastructure ensures a high educational level of workers and employees.

The latest research results effectively find their way into the economy through a close cooperation with 50 research institutes of Fraunhofer Society, Max Planck Society and other contracted research institutes and over 500 technology transfer centres of the Steinbeis Foundation. Baden-Württemberg is known not only for brands like Mercedes, Porsche, Bosch and Zeppelin, which were named after inventors and fundamental innovations, but also for famous poets and creative thinkers like Schiller, Hesse, Hegel and Einstein.

Baden-Württemberg is represented by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Tourism of the state of Baden-Württemberg in the DC Network.
